California Proposition 65 Warning

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

What this actually means

That wording is alarming, and the context almost never gets explained, so here it is.

California's Proposition 65 requires a business to warn you whenever a product may expose you to any chemical on a state list of roughly 900 substances. It is a disclosure law, not a finding that a particular product is unsafe, and the threshold for warning is deliberately set low. Warnings appear on coffee, on parking garages, and on a great many things sold online.

Why it is on our products

We ship hair directly from the manufacturers in China, which is what lets us sell a wig for $40 that a salon sells for $150. We have not independently tested the fibre, the dyes, or the cap materials, and we do not have chemical testing data from our supplier yet.

Faced with that, we would rather warn you than quietly assume the answer is fine. We have applied this warning across the catalogue rather than guessing which items need it. If we obtain testing data that changes the picture, we will update this page and say what changed.

If you are wearing a wig on a bare scalp

If you are going through chemotherapy or radiotherapy, are pregnant, or have broken or sensitive skin on your scalp, this is worth raising with your care team rather than deciding from a web page. A liner or mesh cap between the wig and your scalp is sensible for comfort in any case, and it also puts a layer between your skin and the wefting.

If you have questions we have not answered here, email us. We will tell you what we know and, where we do not know, we will say that instead of inventing an answer.
